Stoke City would have been better off if Tony Pulis had remained as manager

< !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd"> At this point in the season, Stoke City fans are rightfully becoming more distraught as their club flirts with relegation. They currently sit in 17th in the table with a mere 23 points, just one point more than the Saints, who sit in 18th. But when looking at the Potters’ record and form this season, it’s no surprise that they’re in the position they’re in. They’ve only managed to win six games while drawing five and losing 13. And half of the games they’ve won have come against the bottom of the table (Southampton, Swansea and West Brom). Jurgen Klopp biography ‘Bring the Noise’ reflects on manic brilliance of Liverpool manager

< !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd"> The career of a successful manager is filled with disappointments, failures, and firings. For every Sir Alex Ferguson, who always seemed to succeed, there is an Antonio Conte, who undoubtedly has a sterling resume but seemingly is about to walk away from a second managerial job in his career rather than be sacked. The reality is international soccer is cruel because there are few opportunities to truly be successful. In European leagues, there are two to three chances to win a trophy and those trophies are won over six to eight months, not a few weeks as in an American sport playoff. Even clubs who have a goal of avoiding relegation or finishing in certain position meet a goal, but the manager’s security lasts only as long that position is maintained. Rarely can such a goal be maintained for long. I use this to frame Raphael Honigstein’s new biography of

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez gamble has backfired

< !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd"> Heading into deadline day for summer transfers, Arsenal were still on the fence regarding the sale of one of their star players, Alexis Sanchez. Ultimately, an agreement to send the Chile international to Manchester City fell through in the final moments of the window. Both Arsenal and City could claim partial blame for the move falling through. Pep Guardiola’s City had all summer to submit a fee to the Gunners for the wantaway Sanchez; however, they chose to wait until the final day of the transfer window to enter a formal offer. Arsenal, on the other hand, did not have a replacement lined up should City make an offer for their forward. In the end, an agreement with Monaco for Thomas Lemar failed to occur within the final few hours of the transfer period, thus ending City’s summer chase for Sanchez.
